IDC connector system simplifies mass assembly

A new family of IDC connectors from AVX Corporation, has a rating of up to 15A at 650V, making it ideally suited for use in applications typically in high-performance industrial equipment, such as high-voltage inverters in the lighting industry.

Available as a single-contact version for separate power handling, or in 2- and 3-way configurations, the 9177 Series connector offers flexibility of placement on the PCB for single or multiple wires. And being end-stackable for larger pin counts, they provide even greater flexibility.

Before assembly, the part is surface mounted on the PCB; solid or stranded wires of 14 and 20AWG may then be inserted into the contact slot, using the hand tool. In a single operation, this process cuts the insulation and enables the individual conductors of the wire to form a homogeneous joint, while the shape of the moulding forms a restraint to the wire when fully inserted in the contact, strengthening the joint. Accordingly, the need for hand soldering and cable preparation is eliminated.

The contacts are of phosphor bronze, and five re-terminations may be performed on each.
